About Us

Lodestar Gardens was established in 2000 by Barbara and Clark Hockabout, to cultivate healthy food, consciousness, conduct, and sustainable practices in ourselves and with others.

In scientific terms, sustainability is defined as a system that can renew itself indefinitely. Sustainable living implies maintaining a balance between the needs of people and nature’s other species, and future generations of both. It means practicing a lifestyle that protects resources for us and our descendants.

Another aspect of sustainability is its political and social interconnectedness. Sustainability embraces the three E’s—Ecology, Economy and Equality. We understand that in this post-modern world, these forces are inextricable and must be considered in every decision we make.

The definition of sustainability that best fits our goals as growers is found in John Jeavon’s brilliant book How to Grow More Vegetables:

Grow and maintain sustainable soil fertility with sufficient humus in the soil while creating thriving mini-ecosystems. (18)
