What is HAP?

Many feel called to return to the land, but few know what it takes. Homesteading is most commonly perceived as building a home and growing your own food. At Lodestar, the definition of homesteading consists of 8 components:

  1. Food & Energy Production
  2. Water Conservation
  3. Shelter Construction
  4. Diligent Animal Husbandry
  5. Waste Recycling
  6. Philosophy of Land Stewardship
  7. Sustainable Community Networking

HAP is an educational program focused on high-desert homesteading skills. It begins with a 6-month residential, immersion program for a small cadre of future homesteaders. Teaching modalities include field work and academic study time culminating in a student-designed final project. First-tier graduates are awarded the Lodestar High-Desert Homesteading Certificate from expert instructors, credentialed by the Arizona Association of Environmental Education (AAEE). Second-year students are invited to continue research and reduced-tuition residency as Homesteading Mentors for the incoming cohort. Upon the third year of participation, graduates are given a garden plot, access to living space, and farm resources to steward their own land.

We agree that our individual contributions to society are enhanced through the experience of collaboration in hands-on, student-centered, project-based learning. Together we explore high-desert agricultural practices, application of permaculture principles, alternative energy production, and the inspirational power of this place in the White Mountains region of the Southwest.

We are seeking driven creatives, philosophers, farmer-poets, & budding homesteaders for our first cohort in April 2027. Admission is limited to the top seven applicants. Currently accepting applications on a rolling basis.

Application deadline: November 11, 2026

Lodestar High-Desert Homesteading Certification Program

Overview:

From April to October 2027, immerse yourself in our high-desert farm-village campus for a full growing year of education. Experience the daily rhythms, challenges, and deep fulfillment of building and operating a thriving off-grid homestead. Over the course of six months, student residents live and learn with credentialed experts and experienced instructors in farming, building, alternative energy, animal husbandry, resource management, herbal medicine, writing, home defense, and more. Apprentices will develop practical competency in all eight components of homesteading.

Our curriculum balances hands-on field work, an independent research project, and classroom learning. A third of the instruction is delivered in the classroom setting and the remainder is delivered in applied field work, field trips, and guest speakers. Primary instruction is complemented by frequent excursions to geological sites, local workshops, farmers markets, and art exhibits, as well as a rich program of guest speakers, including permaculture design experts, native seed specialists, artists, and local food producers. Discover lifelong, like-minded friendships and build a strong foundation for sustainable lifestyle choices.

What distinguishes HAP from other homesteading training options?

Sustained, Residential Learning

Unlike workshops, courses, and books, the Homesteading Apprenticeship Program offers sustained homesteading on-the-ground experience for three seasons—spring, summer, fall. Each season affords opportunities to apply different skills and explore different research topics. Sustained residential time also fosters community building, networking, more comprehensive understanding, human interaction skills, creativity, and a greater appreciation for diverse cultures and natural environments. Participants appreciate the concept of beginning-middle-end, a fading value in this fragmented, specialized modern culture. Seasons, animals, plants and humans require time to process. Appreciation, meaning, and discovering personal truth require time to observe and assimilate. Trial and error, the most personal and effective type of learning (as well the least popular) require time to analyze and revise. Discoveries come from this.

Experience and Credibility

Clark and Barbara have decades of homesteading and community-building experience. To enrich the curriculum, they also network with other veteran homesteaders who operate various scales of operation in a variety of climates and environmental conditions. As guest speakers and during trips to their farms, local homesteaders and add their stories and wisdom to the student’s understanding of homesteading options. Shared readings, discussions, and journal writing are also valuable components of the curriculum, enriching the empirical and sensory with intellectual balance. Barbara is certified by the Arizona Association of Environmental Education (AAEE).

Health & Safety

We believe in nourishing the mind-body-spirit connection from the ground up. Our students grow and eat fresh, nutritionally-dense, organic food three meals a day. They also enjoy living communally in sustainably-built residences. Participants will respect each other’s space, styles, culture, and personality differences. No form of humiliation will be tolerated. Fair conflict resolution policy will be followed by everyone. Regular round table discussions will serve as a venue for topics as well as issues for the community to discuss.

Creativity is highly personal

Creativity

Our program encourages and facilitates individual creativity & spiritual health through silent retreats, embodied mindfulness practices, ceramics, painting, photography, and more. In the dance between pen and plow, our students’ field work is balanced by intellectual engagement: Socratic discussion, reading groups, a personalized final project, and writing instruction.

Autonomy

Lodestar Gardens has no master and is accountable to no organization. Our Lodestar Grassroots Co-Op has been self-governing, self-motivated and organized by agreements between its members since 2012. We apply the same principles to the Homesteading Apprenticeship Program within the framework of a clearly defined curriculum and schedule. No single dogma or philosophy is embedded into the program. A variety of practices are explored. No best practices are touted for all situations.

Graduate Benefits and Career Opportunities

We offer personalized career guidance & assistance for all graduates in our network of homesteaders, growers, businesses, and related programs across the county, state, and nation. Other perks include letters of recommendation, networking assistance, phone interview time with future employers, help writing resumes, and addressing concerns graduates may have in building next steps for themselves
